Smartphones are now the most popular type of phone in the world.

Believe it or not, upon until recently smartphones were not the most popular type of phone in the world. The most popular type of phone was the feature phone.

Until just recently, feature phones had the majority of the market share.

Phone manufactures will not start to shift an even larger focus of their product development and manufacturing to the ever growing smartphone market.

A report from research firm IDC showed that more than half of cellphone shipments in the first quarter were smartphones. Manufacturers shipped 418.6 million cellphones, 216.2 million of which were smartphones, says IDC.

Samsung shipped 70.7 million, with 32.7 percent of the market in the first quarter of 2013. Apple was in 2nd doing 37.4 million iPhones and 17.3 percent of the market share. LG was a far off 3rd with 10.3 million smartphones, 4.8 percent of the market.
